• Do we need an adoption agency? How do we choose one if needed? After selecting a country, you will need to work through an international adoption agency who will serve as your “primary service provider”. It is vital to evaluate the role the agency will play in the foreign country, their track record in-country, what legal steps they will perform for you and what is your responsibility to accomplish. • How do U.S. and in-country immigration laws & regulations affect our adoption? You must comply with laws and regulations in the placing country to obtain permission to leave with your child. You must also satisfy U.S. immigration regulations so your child is allowed entry into the U.S. with you.
• What do we need to do once we return to the U.S. with our child? Adoptions from some countries require adoption finalization once you return home to gain U.S. citizenship for your new child. Re-adopting, or finalizing once home, permits you to obtain a U.S. court adoption decree and a U.S. birth certificate.
